QatarEnergy Negotiates Long Term US LNG Supply After 7 Month Hormuz Closure

The state energy firm is pursuing supply from both operating and under construction projects in the US to maintain commitments to Asian and European customers, according to people familiar with the talks. The world's largest LNG seller is negotiating contracts lasting 15 to 20 years to establish a supply base outside the Middle East after war with Iran crippled export capacity.

QatarEnergy extended a force majeure declaration two weeks ago because almost every cargo leaving the Ras Laffan terminal passes through the Strait of Hormuz. In July, the company bought 33 spot cargoes from US exporters, primarily Venture Global LNG, for approximately $1 billion to fulfill contracts it could not serve itself.
