1 Bipartisan Lawmakers Fight for Kennedy Center Following Senate Block 🇺🇸 US Politics Sep 29, 7:20 AM EDT 26/17
A group of legislators from across the political spectrum has begun working to prevent the destruction of Washington's most famous riverfront arts venue. This push to safeguard the Kennedy Center follows an incident Monday night when Senator Mike Lee (R-Utah) used a procedural objection to kill a Senate resolution that would have banned the demolition of presidential memorials.
The institution has been closed since last month as a legal battle continues over whether President Donald Trump can add his name to the building. Trump has not ruled out tearing down the structure and said he will see how the matter plays out in court. Consequently, the 2026 Kennedy Center Honors will be held at Capital One Arena, the first time the event has occurred off-site. The naming dispute has already caused gifts to the center to plunge 42%, while donation pledges dropped more than 100% as previous commitments were withdrawn.
