1 74% of Government Held Yemen Households Lack Food in Record Crisis ⚔️ War Oct 1, 4:13 PM EDT 44/23
A surge in fighting between the Saudi-led coalition and Houthi rebels is crippling food supply chains and displacing thousands of civilians. The World Food Programme reported Friday that 74% of households in accessible government-held areas of Yemen are unable to meet their basic food needs, a record high that affects roughly 10 million people. This shortage is worsening as food prices rise and accessibility to frontline areas such as Taiz declines in a country that imports 90% of its food.
The nutrition crisis follows a wave of military strikes, including 27 raids on Houthi positions in Taiz that destroyed military vehicles, according to the Yemeni military. Saudi defense systems continue to intercept Houthi ballistic missiles and drones targeting cities including Khamis Mushait and Jizan. This escalation includes the first coalition air strikes on the capital, Sanaa, since fighting resumed, with hits reported across the governorates of Saada, Taiz and Amran.
